agent-side checkout fails with could not read from remote repository

I've looked, but I'm not finding anything that specifically touches on our issue.  We're trying to perform an agent-side checkout pulling from a git repo.  We're using passphrase-less keys.  What I'm not seeing is if the key actually gets copied to the agent or not.  From what I've read, it looks like if it was it would be deleted afterward.  I also believe the server and agent are running under the same username/account.  Anyway, here's the warning message from the logs:

[2016-02-04 02:40:41,586]   WARN -      jetbrains.buildServer.VCS - '/usr/bin/git fetch --progress origin +refs/heads/master:refs/heads/master' command failed.
stderr: There was a problem while connecting to <git repo ommitted for this post>
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

Please make sure you have the correct access rights
and the repository exists.

Server side checkouts are fine, just not the agent side checkouts.  Bug?  Any help would be appreciated.

Hello James,

Does the checkout on agent work if you put the key manually on the agent machine? Please attach teamcity-vcs.log from the agent.
