cannot login to TeamCity 5.0 via IDEA 9 - RuntimeException

Trying to log into Teamcity 5 via a plugin for IDEA 9 and receive the following exception:
"Cannot login to TeamCity: java.lang.RuntimeException: jetbrains.buildServer.xmlrpc.RemoteCallException: Call http://xxxxxxxxx:8081/TeamCity-5.0.1 /RPC2 RemoteAuthenticationServer.getServerVersion: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcClientException: Unexpected exception in client processing"

Credentials are correct as I can login via a browser.  Plugin worked before upgrading from IDEA 8 to 9.  Plugin version is: 4.0.0.9140

Does the plugin not work with IDEA 9?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are there any exceptions in the IDEA log file? Could you please attach log file?

Are there any errors on the server side, i.e in the teamcity-server.log?

There are no errors/warnings in the Teamcity log.  Interesting though, I restarted Tomcat and tried it again before Teamcity was up and it failed with the same exception.

I tried it on a friends PC who has a newly installed version of IDEA 9 too.  He was able to get the plugin to work.  Only difference is that he has never tried before, even in previous versions.  Is it possible that something was carried through from the upgrade to IDEA 9?
I also downloaded and manually installed the plugin from the TeamCity server (version 5.10715).  Same errors.  sigh...

Do you use proxy servers? If so, can you try to login with disabled proxy?

We do use a proxy.  I tried both with and without the checkbox checked on the Teamcity plugin login dialog.  It gives the exact same error, which is strange.  I would think it would be different.

problem solved: there was a "space" at the end of the TeamCity
url I was using and it was not being trimmed by the
plugin.
