What is the best way to migrate from TC 4.0.1 with no database to 5.1.2 with SQL Server 2008 database

We want to upgrade from TeamCity Enterprise 4.0.1 (build 8171) to Enterprise 5.1.2.  Our current configuration uses the default method for data storage.  We want to use SQL Server 2008.  Ideally, we would like to install the new 5.1.2 version on a new server and load the data from the old version to the new using SQL Server 2008 and then decommission the older version.  What is the best procedure to accomplish this?

Thank you

Hi Steve,

In order to upgrade up to 5.1.x. and migrate to MS SQL, you can follow the scenario below.

1. Stop the current TC server. Backup the whole <TEAMCITY_DATA> directory (just make a zip of it).

2. Upgrade the TC software up to 5.1.x version. See http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD5/Upgrade for details.

3. Start the TC server (it will upgrade its data according to the new version).

4. Ensure that TC server works OK.

5. Stop the TC server. Optional backup the whole <TEAMCITY_DATA> directory once more (but don't drop the previouse backup).

6. Download a MS SQL JTDS driver. Create a new empty database in the MS SQL server. See http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD5/Setting+up+an+External+Database#SettingupanExternalDatabase-MicrosoftSQLServer for details.

7. In the <TEAMCITY_DATA>/config directory, copy the database.mssql.properties.dist file into database.mssql.properties, modify it to specify correct database login credentials.

8. Using the maintainDB tool, perform the data migration as described in http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD5/Migrating+to+an+External+Database .
