What do the "IDE Notifier" do

Hi,

We  have a license for TeamCity 4.5 and are using it on our main build  server.  I also have an evaluation TC 5.0.2 server on my computer for  evaluation and testing purposes.

2 questions: first is about the IDE

I am exploring the available builds completion notification mechanisms.  Even though I enabled the IDE Notifier on all projects, on both of our servers, if the build fails or is successful, I receive nothing in Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 (having both opened).  Nothing in the output pane, no popups, ...

The documentation seems a bit vague about the effects of the features.  What should be expected from that functionnality and is there any plugins required?

We would like a custom application to be notified.  Is there a hook we can use or do we have to develop our own plugin?  Right now, the only way to achieve this is to periodically monitor the RSS feed for changes.  A passive method would be preferred.

Thanks.

Pascal,

Unfortunately IDE Notifier can not be used for Visual Studio. As an alternative to it you could use Windows Tray Notifier, please see more in documentation.

Yes, to receive notification in custom application possible only via a custom TeamCity Java plugin. Please take a look at our documentation about developing custom notifier plugin at http://confluence.jetbrains.net/display/TCD5/Custom+Notifier. Is this still true with Team City 6.5.1 and addin 6.5?

Hi Brendan

Multiple features are mentioned here.
Which one do you mean?

Sorry for not being more clear.

I was referring the build notifications within Visual Studio. I have TeamCity 6.5.1 running and I'm using TeamCity plugin 6.5 within Visual Studio 2010. I have configured TeamCity to notify me through the IDE of any status changes to the build, but I've never seen any popups or notification of any kind within the IDE.

I can get the windows system tray notification application to work and it does notify as expected, I just can't get any notifications to appear with the Visual Studio plugin. After seeing this post, I'm beginning to think that IDE notifcation isn't supported with Visual Studio. Is that correct?

Thanks,
Brendan

Yes, That's correct.

VS addin does not diplay notifications. But There are other options - Tray Notifier tool, Jabber, and a set of 3rd-party plugins.

Is this still true with version 2018.2.4?

Hi Ike,

we have a feature request for it here: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/TW-36167 .

From an internal comment on that issue, the structure of the VS API a while back made it quite hard to develop notifications in a way that satisfied our needs. We'd still recommend the Windows Tray Notifier for notifications explicitly: https://confluence.jetbrains.com/display/TCD18/Windows+Tray+Notifier
