Checking for Changes with git very slow

It takes 1-2 minutes to check for changes on some of our git vcs roots. This adds 1-2 minutes to our build and I'm not sure why it's so slow. Is this expected? What is it doing that makes it take so long?

I filtered out other projects and anonymized things.
