Team City artefact cleanup and the .teamcity folder

We are using Team City  7.1.3
We have set up Team City to automatically cleanup artefacts every night
We have noticed that although the artefacts are successfully deleted, for each build a .teamcity folder is left behind. Although the contents of this folder is pretty small, we have so many builds that cumulatively these folders begin to take up a significant amount of disk space.
Is it safe to delete these folders?  If it is safe, why doesn't the automatic cleanup do it?
Note that I tried deleting one of these folders and it didn't seem to have any adverse effect - I could still see the results of the build in the team city UI.
