Constant 'Failed to collect changes' error on all github repos

This afternoon we started seeing the following errors across all build configurations on one of our TC build servers:

Failed for the root 'Git' #46: The repository at directory 'C:\ProgramData\JetBrains\TeamCity\system\caches\git\git-1A7BA372.git' cannot be opened or created, reason: null

Another server with identical build configurations (and using the same Github repos) is fine, no issues whatsoever.

Any ideas on what is wrong (and more importantly, how to fix it?)?

Hi,

Please attach teamcity-vcs.log file and point out which TeamCity version do you use?

Thanks Alina,

The version for this server is 8.1.1 (build 29939). Attached is the teamcity-vcs.log

Hi Dean,

unfortunately it is not clear from the logs why the error happens. Does the 'C:\ProgramData\JetBrains\TeamCity\system\caches\git\git-1A7BA372.git' exist on disk? Could you please provide listing of files inside this directory and  'C:\ProgramData\JetBrains\TeamCity\system\caches\git\git-1A7BA372.git\config'? I think you can workaround the issue by removing the directory.

Hi Dmitry,

The folder does exist, with just one file in it called timestamp. There is another git folder besides this one, also with only one file called timestamp in it. Besides that, a map file in the root git folder. I looked at the git cache folders on our other build servers and there are many files and folders in all of them, so something is wrong here. Should I remove everything and try again?

Removed the .git folder, no change, same error. Am upgrading to 8.1.5 and removing the VCS entirely, will rebuild
it, reattach and see if that works.

Upgrading/removing seems to have done the trick, no more errors. Not sure why it started, but the server was slated for an upgrade regardless so... :) Thanks to Alina and Dmitry for jumping on this so quickly, much appreciated!
