Is it possible to run TeamCity (non-prod) using SQL Server Express 2014?

I have followed the configuration documentation for setting up SQL Server. When I hit Proceed, I get the following error:

The connection to the host 1433, named instance sqlexpress2014 failed. Error: "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Receive timed out". Verify the server and instance names and check that no firewall is blocking UDP traffic to port 1434.  For SQL Server 2005 or later, verify that the SQL Server Browser Service is running on the host.
SQL exception: The connection to the host 1433, named instance sqlexpress2014 failed. Error: "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Receive timed out". Verify the server and instance names and check that no firewall is blocking UDP traffic to port 1434.  For SQL Server 2005 or later, verify that the SQL Server Browser Service is running on the host.

As noted, the Browser service is not running. It (and SQL Agent) are disabled by Microsoft in Express.

So, is it possible to use Express or is the Browser service absolutely necessary?

For what it's worth, I have enabled TCP and configured my named instance to explicitly use port 1433 so I would think that the Browser service shouldn't be explicitly necessary...

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

According to log "The connection to the host 1433, named instance sqlexpress2014 failed." you have not specified host, only port. Please double check that everything configured correctly.
