Checkout and build branch triggered

Is there not a way to have the build checkout the branch that activate the trigger? I can monitor the branches I want (ETL_*), but I don't see a way to configure the build to use the branch that caused the trigger? Seems the only branch that can be built is the default branch. Surely that is not true.
