Always building in Debug Mode

Our automated builds with team city were setup recently by a colleague who just retired. When looking at the settings, everything seems to configured to build in release mode, but that is not happening. In our deploy package zip files, we are finding that the content to be deployed is in ..obj/debug/.. etc. and when we tried to deploy to production our team city builds for the first time today, the performance became so bad (web servers pegged at 100%) that we had to rollback our release and learned afterward that it had been built in debug mode.  We must be missing something. Any tips?
