New pro instance, new agents, new licencing
Until recently we have used one teamcity profesional instance, at present version 2024.03. It has 13 agents provided by licence keys, we would just buy new licences when needed.
Last month we installed another instance, buying another 6 agents. The new instance is version 2024.7. When we tried to install agents licences the "traditional" way, we weren't allowed to. Instead, when we logged into JB from TC, additional licence appeared - "TeamCity Professional Server". It wasn't under the proper team, but we were able to transfer it.
So, now we have 2 TC instances - for the "old" one the agents seem to be handled by some kind of "Legacy" licence, for the "new" one it seems to be some "collective" one.
The question/concern is: what will happen when we update the "old" instance to 2024.7? Will the agent licences be kept and the work uninterrupted, or are we going to get through a similiar process? Frankly, it wasn't really intuitive and quick…

Hi,
Sorry for the inconvenience you had to go through to get your new TeamCity server license activated. It is true that the new Licensing Management System, introduced in TeamCity 2024.07, requires you to activate your TeamCity license using a JetBrains account. There are several benefits to the new licensing model, but I can see how it may have been frustrating. The licenses use the JetBrains Teams account system.
Under the new licensing system, each activated TeamCity server needs only a single license, which will contain all of your agents for that TeamCity server. This means that you no longer need to manually enter license keys for every additional agents batch you purchase or every server license update. TeamCity will automatically retrieve information about all currently active licenses, and apply them on-the-fly.
Does your “old” TeamCity server have it's own unique batch of agent licenses? For already paid legacy licenses, you can activate your TeamCity server once it has been upgraded to TeamCity 2024.07 using your JetBrains account. From there, click the “Upload License Keys” button to upload your existing license keys to be converted to the new format and added to your JetBrains account. Please find the details of this process in our documentation here: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/teamcity/manage-teamcity-license.html#Activate+Existing+Legacy+Licenses.
